Parent consultations

Aleksandra Lesner — Parent consultations. A parent consultation focuses on the parent’s questions and experiences. It can concern the relationship with a child, parenting difficulties or changes affecting everyday family life.

Space for the parent’s perspective

You can describe situations that keep returning, your own responses and what you have already tried. Tiredness, differences between carers and questions about the child’s needs may also matter. The conversation provides an opportunity to consider the circumstances and possible directions for further support.

The most important changes happen when we try to understand what a symptom is telling us, rather than simply suppressing it.

  • Experiences of growing up in a dysfunctional family (DDD)

Clarifying the purpose of the meeting

Explain that you are seeking a parent consultation and give the child’s age. Ask whether another carer should attend and whether the child should be present. If the concern relates to a previous assessment, clarify which questions about its findings you would like to discuss.

Preparing for the conversation

Note a few everyday examples and the issues you would like to address first. You can include observations from other carers or school, distinguishing them from your own. Discuss any useful documents and further arrangements with the practitioner rather than assuming a particular consultation format.
